Leisure Networks supports Torquay’s Greatest Shave

Compassion, beauty, community – just some of the words that came to mind when housemates Mon and Bel put their heads on the line to raise a staggering $1923 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Supported by Leisure Networks, Mon and Bel became housemates just before Christmas last year when Mon moved into to Bel’s established supported independent living home in Torquay.

“Bel and Mon did let us know early on that their friendship would be filled with fun and mischief!” Said Louise Unsworth, Team Leader, Independent Living. “Then a couple of months ago they decided to take up the World’s Greatest Shave Challenge.”

“Because so many people are battling with Leukemia, and we have a friend who has had Leukemia and is in remission. Plus it’s a great cause,” explained Mon.

“Mon and Bel organised a morning tea to launch their fundraising campaign then they invited their friends and family to join them at the All Aboard disABILITY Support Service monthly hang-out at the Salvation Army Church, Torquay to watch the main event,” said Louise.

“I was very emotional and excited,” said Mon. “It was overwhelming. It felt good to have lots of support watching us both.”

“I was happy and excited,” Bel added.

While there were a few nerves along the way, the brave housemates went all the way, showing true resilience and strength, joining a cast of over 2 million Aussies who have participated over the past 25years to support the Leukemia Foundation.

“Very proud of myself and proud of Bel,” said Mon.

“So proud of myself,” echoed Bel.

“I’m really proud of what Mon and Bel achieved,” said Louise. “It’s not just the money that they raised, which is great, but it was a really noble gesture that demonstrates to all of us how true beauty comes from inside.”
