Girls Court a Whole new bALL game

Leisure Networks together with Geelong United Basketball were thrilled to learn that their application for funding to the 2023-24 Change Our Game Community Activation Grants Program was successful for the girls who bALL.

Girls who bALL is an introductory basketball program for women and young girls with a disability along with a club education component.

As a Regional Sports Assembly and Disability Support Provider, Leisure Networks is committed to providing sport and recreation opportunities for everyone, particularly under-represented groups, such as people with a disability and women and girls.

“We are excited by the possibilities this program will open up for women and young girls with a disability, said David Meade, CEO Leisure Networks. “Our whole purpose at Leisure Networks is to connect people with community and sport is such an important vehicle to make this happen.

State Member for Geelong, Christine Couzens MP, is a proud member of the Geelong community and can see the positive impact this program will have.

“At the community level, women with disabilities have lower rates of organized sport participation (19%) compared to both non-disabled women (34%) and men with disabilities (27%). Therefore, being able to design programs like “girls who bALL” bridges these gaps and supports our region” said Christine Couzens MP.

Through previous work in the all-abilities space, Leisure Networks has assisted Geelong United in developing an All-Abilities League, which commenced in 2023 and will continue in the 2024-25 summer season. A significant outcome, among many others, is that participants of the “Girls Who bALL” program will transition into the Geelong United All-Abilities League.

The Change Our Game Community Activation Grants Program supports community sport and recreation clubs and eligible organisations to deliver community-level initiatives that enable participation, build capability and leadership, and celebrate the role of women and girls in community sport and active recreation.

Registrations for the program open in the new few weeks.  Check out the Leisure Networks and Geelong United Basketball social media accounts for more information.
