MacKillop Family Activity days
Leisure Networks in conjunction with Bayview Disability Services (based at MacKillop Family Services) ran 2 extremely successful days full of activities for the whole family.
Friday July 4th was held at Skilled Stadium and saw around 30 people including people with disabilities, their family members and carers participate in a range of activities. Firstly there was a music session run by Zane McKenzie and Cam Libbis, allowing everyone to test out their musical talents as well as joining in the their teams AFL club theme song. From music the group then moved into circus skills!! Watching everyone try to juggle, balance, throw etc was truly great fun. I imagine circus skills is something that nearly everyone present had not attempted before which added to enjoyment levels. A big thank-you to Rick Humphrey from Bannockburn Primary School for donating his time to come and run the circus skills session. Thanks Rick!!
After lunch, we all headed out on to the hallowed turf at Skilled Stadium to play Soccer and AFL. Paul Schoe from the Lara Soccer Club took the group through a quick warm up session and then we were straight into a game. Some classic moments were produced by the group included some tragic falls and scintillating goals. Fortunately no-one was hurt!!
Following soccer, the group participated in a game of Recreational Football (a non-tackling version of AFL) Steven Tibbits explained the game to the group which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Friday July 11th was held at the Arena, and was an opportunity for people to participate in Gymnastics and Basketball. The Geelong Gymnastics Centre were very accommodating and allowed the 30 or so participants access to all of the equipment (including the MEGA trampoline!!) Kerri Woods along with a number of volunteers assisted the participants on all apparatus ensuring the group would have a day to remember. It would be fair to say that even though it was near impossible for some to exit the foam pit that the trampoline was their favourite thing.
After lunch the group then headed to the basketball to enjoy a fun-filled 1 hour session with head coach of the Big V basketball team Dave Brooner. A number of skill games followed by a full-court game was just what the doctor ordered to finish what had been yet another very successful day.
A big thank-you to Sally O’Toole and Holly Broomhall from MacKillop for their help in co-ordinating both days. Also a big thank-you to the carers and workers who assisted with the activity days. I can’t with until the next lot of activities
