Get Active

“Sustainable Physical Activity in Neighbourhoods” (SPAN)

This project in Corio and Norlane is progressing well as it heads towards its completion date.
Although he hasn’t seen a ‘cricketing tonne’ for a while, Steve’s ‘After School Activity Program’ for Term 3 has smashed out a ‘tonne’, with over 100 students taking part.  Students have thoroughly enjoyed softball, table tennis, dance, 10 pin bowling and badminton.  We look forward to seeing the Term 4 program when Steve masterminds that soon…..Work has begun on the third ‘Hospital Admission Reduction Program’ (HARP) ‘Come-&-Try’ program for their clients.  Programs have been run in April and July, and the next one will start on October 4th.  Participants will again enjoy a 5 week program with the chance to try NoFalls, Strength & Tone, Tai Chi, Bowls/Bocce and Table Tennis.  Women from the Wathaurong Aboriginal Cooperative are about to embark on a jam-packed 5 week ‘Come-&-Try’ program.  The participants will enjoy Snooker, Shooting, Water Aerobics, Croquet, Softball, Archery, Darts, Boxercise and African Drumming.  The program aims to provide a variety of fun activities that people might not usually try, with the opportunity to go on and participate with a club if they want.We also have several other exciting programs ‘in the pipeline’ and will provide more information as they develop.

‘NoFalls’ in Geelong

The two new NoFalls programs in Geelong are going along swimmingly!!  St. Marys Social Group had a fantastic start and has continued to maintain solid numbers.  Meanwhile, Geelong West has been the surprise packet of the two programs and have hit double figures after only 8 weeks!  It’s fantastic to see that these two programs are booming and are helping the participants to remain physically active.Contact Paul at Leisure Networks on 5224 9923 for more information.

Lifeball

Lifeball is a walking ball game specifically for Older Adults.  It’s a thinking team game designed for fun and fitness.  Lifeball is now running in Ocean Grove and Linton!  The Ocean Grove program runs every Monday at 9.30am at the Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve, and the Linton program runs every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at 11.30am at the Linton Recreation Reserve.  Anyone is welcome to come along and see what Lifeball is all about!!!Contact Paul at Leisure Networks on 5224 9923 for more information.

Pole Walking – what the?

What is ‘pole walking’ I hear you ask?  Well, it has nothing to do with ‘pole dancing’ – so get that out of your mind.  It’s fair to say Kevin Rudd won’t be interested…Pole Walking is a new physical activity that will be hitting the Barwon Region over the next few months.  Think “walking with ski poles”, and you have a fair picture in your head.  Pole Walking allows you to use your upper body to power you along with the use of high-tech walking poles – “4 feet instead of 2”.  And the benefits of ‘pole walking’ compared to regular walking are quite amazing:

  • Healthier for your heart with 20 - 45% more oxygen uptake Works every major muscle group to strengthen and tone Lose weight faster - burns calories 20% and more than just walking Achieve the same benefits as more intense activities without the risk of pain/strain Safe, effective rehabilitation Time efficient, sociable and in the open air Improves orthopedic problems - back, neck, shoulders Assists balance, stability and mobility
  • Harmonises mind & body - reduces stress, improves mood

Leisure Networks plans to establish 6 pole walking groups across the region, initially focusing on Colac, Corio, Apollo Bay, Golden Plains Shire and the Bellarine Peninsula. And don’t forget, PICSAR can help your club or group in getting more people involved in your sport or recreation activity by starting up a participation program!PICSAR can also help you to get into a sport or recreation activity if you are looking for something to get you active.

If you would like more information, or want to get any of these or one of your own initiatives happening, please contact Mathew Kelly on 5224 9923 or mat@leisurenetworks.org  for assistance in engaging people within your community in physical activity.
