City of Greater Geelong/Leisure Networks Summer Edition 2007

Welcome to the Summer Edition of Reclink

This is the first edition of the quarterly Recreation Link that is linking with the ‘E-News’ newsletter distributed by Leisure Networks. The aim is to reduce the duplication of information being sent to clubs and associations. During the development of the Geelong Region Sports Development Plan it was identified that clubs are often overburdened with information from their Council, Sports Assembly and State Sporting Association. This partnership with Leisure Networks to combine and
distribute Recreation Link with the ‘E-News’ is an attempt to minimize that duplication. We hope you enjoy the new format and find the information useful.

The ongoing drought and water restrictions have certainly been consuming significant amounts of time for many involved in sport and recreation. Obviously there are short-term measures to assist sport to continue to run during this period, however we also need to be looking at sustainable measures to reduce our reliance on potable water. The City’s recently completed Sustainable Water Use Plan and followup report titled Sustainable Sportsfield Management provide an overview of the measures that City will be pursuing. These are both available on the City’s website at - www. g e e l o n g a u s t r a l i a . c o m . a u

We thank Clubs & Associations for their ongoing support and cooperation during this difficult period.

Planning Update

Greater Geelong Cycling Strategy
With funding support from Sport & Recreation Victoria, the City is currently in the process of developing a new cycling strategy with the aim of making the City of Greater Geelong more cycling friendly by developing a plan for the creation/improvement of cycling networks and assessing the feasibility of the development of a “Home for Cycling and Wheeled Sports.” If you
wish to provide some input into the strategy an on-line survey is available on the City’s website at
www. g e e l o n g a u s t r a l i a . c o m . a/Services_In_Geelong/Sports_and_Recreation/Cycle_Strategy/

Armstrong Creek Urban Growth Plan
The draft Armstrong Creek Urban Growth Plan is currently available for public comment. The Plan provides the development framework for Geelong’s primary growth area. It aims to concentrate the majority of growth in Geelong in the area south of the railway line and includes parts of the suburbs and localities of Grovedale, Marshall, Connewarre and Mt Duneed.

The Plan defines an Urban Growth Area of approximately 2,350 hectares with an estimated capacity of 22,000 dwellings, and a potential population of 54,000 persons. The area will provide a range of housing densities, a sub-regional activity centre, local activity centres, employment areas, transport networks, sport and recreation facilities and open space.

You are encouraged to read the draft Plan and consider the implications and requirements for your sport as a result of this proposed development.

The Plan is available for viewing on Council’s website at -www.geelongaustralia.com.au/Service
s_In_Geelong/Planning/Strategic_Planning/Armstrong_Creek_Urban_Growth_Plan/

Should you not wish to read the entire document, the section relating to Recreation and Open Space provision is in Volume 1 – Urban Growth Plan, section 4.7.

Geelong Region Sports Development Plan
As a followup to the Geelong Region Sports Development Plan, the G21 Sport & Recreation Pillar is now working with three sports to develop specific development plans for their sport in the region. The sports selected as a result of an Expression of

Interest process are:
Tennis - lead agency Tennis Victoria
Hockey – lead agency Hockey Geelong with support from Hockey Victoria
Cycling – lead agency Geelong Cycling Club with support from Cycle Sports Victoria

The development of these plans are assisting sports to address long-standing issues and strengthen the relationship between key stakeholders.

Sportslink

Clubs and community groups are often telling us that they find it hard to market their activities to the broader community and also have limited time to find the sort of support they need to keep their groups operating to their full potential. We believe that www.sportslink.org.au will assist alleviating some of these issues.

Sportslink.org.au has now been in operation since March 2006 and currently has over 700 community clubs and groups registered. sportslink.org.au is not just for sporting groups, it provides all clubs and activity groups with an opportunity to have their own web page containing club contact details and a place where activities, events and training details can be advertised. It is also a site where clubs and groups can go to for support, resources and information to assist them in their development. sportslink.org.au is also the place where people will turn to for information about available activities, sports, recreation and leisure pursuits i.e.. – where groups are – what sort of activities are available – which clubs have a social component – what nights are training nights –where the veteran competitions are – and who to ring and where to go.

There is no cost involved but plenty of benefits. It will be your chance to let everyone know who you are, where you are and what you’re about. The website will be updated regularly and the information will always be no more than two months old, sometimes significantly less.

Leisure Networks and the City of Greater Geelong are hoping to get all the clubs and groups within Geelong registered on sportslink.org.au and hope that in time this will be the method of communication between the community groups and Local Government Agencies.

To take advantage of this opportunity it is important that you register your club on the site To register you need someone in your club or group to have an email and be the contact for the group/club. All you need to do is go to www.sportslink.org.au check that your club is not there and then register. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to be part of this site, which is soon to become a state wide date base of groups and clubs. Should you require any further information please contact Jordie on 5224 9927 or email - jordie@leisurenetworks.org

Drought Implications on Sport

The City of Greater Geelong has over 120 turf sporting grounds used by a variety of groups for a number of different sports. The current drought and water restrictions are having a significant impact on the surface and safety of these grounds. The turf grass on many of these grounds will be lost if a frequent summer rain does not occur, or if there is no intervention with an alternative water source. We have compiled a list of alternative pre-season training venues in an attempt to preserve our fragile grounds. To view information on pre-season training venues and ground  inspections please visit www.geelongaustralia.com.au and click on the Water Restrictions – Sporting Ground Inspection link on the website’s home page.

Council’s Parks and Recreation & Open Space staff in conjunction with Club and Association representatives have been conducting weekly ground inspections across the municipality. As a result a number of grounds have needed to be closed for use. Fortunately we currently have enough playable grounds to relocate games. Despite this more formal inspection process, it is essential that clubs continue to carry out their own ground inspections prior to play.
For further information relating to Ground Inspections please contact Mr David Goldie, Recreation & Open Space Officer on 5227 0380.
