Media Release - Work kicks off on Legends Plaza
Work will commence this month on a pedestrian plaza in Kardinia Park dedicated to local sporting legends. The Legends Plaza will be located in front of Skilled Stadium’s Western Entrance and will feature new pavements, lighting, seating, trees and artwork. Council’s Sport and Recreation portfolio holder Cr John Mitchell said the artwork would symbolise the efforts of the legendary sports men and women of the Geelong region. “The Geelong region has a proud history in sporting participation and has produced individuals who have taken on the best of the best, both nationally and internationally,” he said. “The plaza will honour those sportspeople who not only have achieved the top level in their chosen sport but have championed sporting participation and excellence in the community,” Cr Mitchell said. Images of the sports legends, and text describing their deeds, will be incorporated into a series of glass panels within the plaza. Lighting at the base of each panel will illuminate the panels after dark. Acclaimed sculptor Mark Stoner will create an installation of nine large concrete sculptures to be displayed amongst the glass panels. Cr Peter McMullin, Arts, Culture and Heritage portfolio holder said the sculptures, at 3.5 metres tall, would be on a grand scale.“The sculptures’ form and scale will draw people into the precinct while the surface detail and colour will invite them to explore the plaza at length,” Cr McMullin said. “The sculptures will follow a serpentine path through the plaza and be positioned as if embracing the display of legends,” he added. He said the Plaza would become a Geelong landmark. “The Legends Plaza is destined to attract a wide audience, not only of sporting enthusiasts and historians but those interested in public art and culture generally,” Cr McMullin said. “The design of the plaza and the selection of the artwork has been achieved following extensive consultation,” Cr McMullin added. The City of Greater Geelong will act as project manager for the $2 million Legends Plaza, which is being funded by the Federal Government through the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts. The funding will provide for the development of the plaza in addition to contributing to the new entrances to the north and south of Skilled Stadium on Moorabool Street.
Fourteen legends selected for plaza
Fourteen of Geelong’s all time great sports stars have been chosen as the first inductees to the Geelong Sports Legends Plaza. On Tuesday night the City of Greater Geelong Council endorsed the selection of the fourteen sports people which was made by an independent Legends Advisory Committee. Sport and Recreation portfolio holder Cr John Mitchell, who was Council’s representative on the Legends Advisory Committee, said the selection of the legends followed extensive consultation.
“The first step in deciding on the legends was to advertise for public nominations,” Cr Mitchell said,” from this process we compiled a working list of names.” “The final selection was made based on specific criteria, namely that the person had achieved greatness in their sporting endeavours while also demonstrating exemplary character and integrity,” Cr Mitchell said.
Cr Mitchell said the committee had resolved to keep the names of the selected legends confidential until the project was unveiled. “It’s natural that people would like to know who are the fourteen legends but believe me it will be worth the wait – the project will be a spectacular tribute to Geelong’s sports greats,” he said. Cr Mitchell thanked the members of the Legends Advisory Committee for their contribution. “The members did an outstanding job in sorting through the nominations and determining the first fourteen inductees – given the wealth of sporting talent in Geelong it was no small task.

Lara Football/Netball development
CoGG, in conjunction with the Lara Secondary College have just completed the major upgrade of an existing asphalt outdoor court area on the College grounds to provide 2 state-of-the-art Rebound Ace netball courts and 1 basketball court. The netball courts have lights installed to allow night training for the upcoming season, and under the agreement with the College, the teams will have access to school facilities on match days for storage and general administration duties.
Lara Cricket Nets
In a joint project between the Lara Sports Club and COGG the cricket nets at Lara Recreation Reserve were upgraded before the commencement of the 2006 / 2007 cricket season. This project was significant as the club contributed financially to the works.
The result is a 4 hard wicket practice facility with an accompanying turf table. The pitches were reorientated to enable the batsmen to hit back out onto the oval rather than towards Mill road. New black powder coated fencing was also installed. This facility is highly utilised by the sporting club and the general community
Bellarine Rail Trail Family Fun Day
The Bellarine Rail Trail Family Fun Day was held on Sunday 1st April 2007 at the Drysdale Railway Station. The Event began at 10.15am when 220 participants were led out onto the Bellarine Rail Trail by the Newtown Pipe Band. Participants chose to walk or cycle one of three different routes (of varying distances) on the Trail and stopped to take advantage of the free activities and entertainment along the way.
Walkers and cyclists caught the Bellarine Railway steam train back to Drysdale Railway Station where they enjoyed a free sausage sizzle and further entertainment.
Event organisers wish to thank Cr Rod Macdonald, Cr Tom O’Connor, Friends of Bellarine Rail Trail, Geelong Steam Preservation Society, Leopold Lions Club, Newtown Pipe Band, Tattersals Funeral Care and the other volunteers who kindly assisted in making the day a success.
Volunteer Profile - FRED COOK Friends of Bellarine Rail Trail
Fred Cook was present on the opening day of the Bellarine Rail Trail in 2001, where people in the community were invited to become involved with the initial plantings on the Trail, and he has been heavily involved and committed to its development ever since.
Fred holds several key positions including Friends of Bellarine Rail Trail (FoBRT) representative on the Bellarine Rail Trail Advisory Committee and Swan Bay Integrated Catchment Management Committee and FoBRT Works Coordinator.
Fred is heavily involved in the identifying and implementation Rail Trail areas to be developed with revegetation works and new furniture items. Since 2002 the Friends group have planted over 20,000 indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses on the trail - all work predominately organised by Fred. Fred has been, and still is, developing what has now come to be known as “Friends Park” at Curlewis, a delightful landscaped picnic area mid point on the Trail, that was in recent times a left-over and forgotten gravel relic of the former Curlewis Railway Station. Within the Park Fred has planted an “Avenue of Honour” for the Ocean Grove RSL, in memory of those who did not return. Fred has dedicated many hours of his time to personally propagate, plan, create, water and protect this now very valuable community asset, the ambience of which is enjoyed daily by local & tourist hikers, joggers & cyclists.
Eastern Park Croquet Club
The Eastern Park Croquet Club is one of the oldest croquet clubs in Geelong District and may well be one of the oldest known croquet clubs in Victoria, was founded in 1912. Basically the building as it stands today, has been as originally constructed all but a small extension to the eastern end of the building. The Club has a small but vibrant group of members that love the game and are passionate about the current and future prospects of the club.
Given that the building was in a relatively poor state the club was lucky enough to secure funding from two key sources. A grant of $18,000, and a 6 month work for the dole scheme provided by “Matchworks”, and a further $20,000 provided by the City of Greater Geelong, courtesy of a Discretionary Grant driven by Cr John Mitchell.
Priorities for the works were put forward by the committee, Work commenced back in September 2006. The work for the dole participants were instrumental in doing all the stripping back of the interior and exterior paintwork of the entire building except for the roof and gable areas which were completed by the City of Greater Geelong’s preferred suppliers. Matchworks staff carried out all works to replace old wire fencing with new federation wire, and renew the original posts, gates etc.
The City of Greater Geelong applied to Heritage Victoria for consent/permits for color schemes and building design alterations. Council’s preferred suppliers were engaged to complete the following:
1. Rewire the building in total and supply new lighting.
2. Supply new water meters and general plumbing improvements.
3. Building Improvements – refitting of new eaves, repairs to gables, and roofing frame.
3. Repairs, sanding and re sheening of existing timber floor.
4. Architects drawings for new shelters and shed, Engineers design drawings for footings.
5. Street traffic management for fencing alterations.
Matchwork’s recently instigated a celebratory luncheon and official opening of the building on the 13th April. Representatives from Matchwork’s, club members, volunteers, Council representative officers and Cr Mitchell and Abley attended. At the opening Cr Mitchell announced a further $10,000 to be allocated to the club for works to improve the kitchen facilities to the delight of the members. Stage two commencing in a few months will see Matchwork’s involved once again providing labor for the construction of the new players shelters and new shed.
The club has indicated that they would like to explore the option of re furbishing the old kitchen with the Proposed $10,000. They have asked the City of Greater Geelong to provide information and assistance once again to roll out the project.
Club Network
With over 1600 sporting and recreation clubs within the Barwon Region, Leisure Networks in partnership with 4 Local Government Authorities (City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire, Colac Otway Shire and Borough of Queenscliff) are continually looking at ways of providing:

The Welcoming inclusive club
What was your first impression when joining a sporting club? Was it a good or bad experience? Did you become a member of the club?
The first impression an individual experiences when approaching a club often determines if they become a member or not. It is important sporting clubs realise this and ensure they have "welcoming" initiatives in place, whether they be formal or informal.
Sport Induction and Orientation is defined as "programs and initiatives that assist everyone involved (including participants/players, coaches, officials, administrators and spectators) to feel welcome and informed about the working of the club."
There are different stages of induction. A traditional induction could be the introduction of a person into a new environment and role. For example, a volunteer may be introduced to a club and their role. 'Sport Induction and Orientation' initiatives are needed at national, state or club level and should be designed not only for new members but for new coaches, officials, administrators and spectators.
There are four categories of 'Sport Induction and Orientation':
1. Participation Beginner programs - introduce a person to the sporting activity for the first time.
2. Club Welcoming initiatives - introduce a person to a club, its personnel and the physical and social environment.
3. Mentoring programs - assist and support an inexperienced person into a new role or activity. Usually an experienced person will provide advice and support for the inexperienced person.
4. Volunteer Induction/Orientation - a volunteer is introduced to the club, the environment and their role. This may include the provision of a club information kit, and a role description.
Examples of these four category areas were provided through case studies at the PFH (Partnerships for Health) Meeting. They outlined existing programs in Victoria and facilitated discussion on potential initiatives the network group could consider for their own sports.
For example:
Participation Beginner Programs
Matthew Loughnane - Program Manager of Victorian Golf Association presented the 'Golf for Me' program which aims to ease beginners into golf through introductory clinics, on and off course training and social functions.
James Fitzpatrick - Executive Officer of Pony Club Association of Victoria presented on the 'Riders without Horses' program. This program introduces riders into the sport who were non-horse owners and has contributed to the Associations 7% increase in membership per annum.
Club Welcoming Initiatives
Michael Pratt - Executive Director of Triathlon Victoria decided that due to increased costs of insurance and increases in membership prices, Triathlon Victoria needed a 'Membership Package' to improve what was offered to members to maintain membership levels. Triathlon Victoria used the new 'Membership Package' to increase income streams and forge industry partnerships.
Jill Taylor and Roberta M-Costanzo of Victorian Little Athletics Association presented on the 'Parent Handbook' provides parents with an overview of the sport and highlights families being involved in the activity and club.
Mentoring Programs
John Hoyne - Administrator and past Trainer of Boxing Victoria spoke about youth and coach mentoring programs in the sport of boxing and how important it is to mentor new boxers and coaches.
Sue Reddish - President of Boroondara Netball Association presented on the mentoring of officials offered by the Association and affiliated clubs. She said umpire mentors / supervisors are appointed to look after first year umpires, providing support needed during games and continued
professional development.
Volunteer Induction/Orientation
Jane Farrance - Executive Director of Gymnastics Victoria presented on the 'Club 10' program the Association introduced to standardise how clubs are administered throughout Victoria - including induction and orientation.
Peter Wright - Executive Director and Paul Williams - Junior Sports Development Officer of Motorcycling Victoria spoke about the 'Motorcycling License Process' and their 'New Members Program'.

Sportslink
We love our sport and Leisure Networks knows how difficult it can be to find the sort of information we need.
We want to know where the club is, who to contact, what time the game is on, if we can get some coaching, how much it will cost us to join, if there is weekday competition, will the social function be going ahead, am I on the team. And we want the information to be up-to-date and accurate.
Clubs want to get their messages out there. Where they are, what events are being held, that there is coaching available, that the competition starts next week, which players scored goals or won pennants, when the social events are taking place, how volunteers can help, that they have an Inclusive policy, that the meeting is scheduled for the first Monday of the month. And they want this to happen easily and efficiently.
Leisure Networks has the answer and Bendigo Bank is a partner in this solution. This is it. sportslink.org.au
Clubs will register their details and update their information every even month, or more often if they wish. (Even months are February, April, June, August, October and December.) They might choose to put teams and results in their News Box and encourage members to check each week. If clubs are affiliated to a larger organisation they may include that information. Up-to-date contact details will ensure that everyone knows how to find the club.
But that's not all. Also on sportslink.org.au will be a calendar of events; links to local government; club development; Leisure Networks E-News; stories and news about featured clubs and individuals, and so much more.
At sportslink.org.au clubs may:
- promote their club
- learn more about the web and the benefits to clubs
- receive the most up to date information (funding, training etc)
- see links to other useful websites
- contribute to sport and recreation planning
- communicate with other sporting clubs
- search for volunteers
At sportslink.org.au individuals may:
- find out about clubs either by type or area
- get info about events
- volunteer at a club
